Weaning journey

Starting your baby’s weaning journey: A guide for parents

Introducing your baby to solid foods is an exciting milestone. It marks the beginning of a whole new world of tastes, textures, and experiences, but it’s also natural for parents to have questions about when to start and how to make the process as smooth as possible.

At The Green Giraffe Nursery, we understand that every child develops at their own pace. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to weaning, and what works for one family may look completely different for another. The key is to follow your child’s cues, take things slowly, and make mealtimes as positive and enjoyable as possible.

When is your baby ready for weaning?

Most babies are ready to begin exploring solid foods at around six months of age, but it’s important to look for signs of readiness rather than focusing solely on age.

Your baby may be ready to start weaning when they can:

  • Sit upright with good head and neck control
  • Coordinate their eyes, hands, and mouth to pick up food and bring it to their mouth
  • Swallow food rather than automatically pushing it back out with their tongue
  • Show an interest in food by watching others eat or reaching for food

Every baby develops differently, so it’s always important to follow professional health guidance and consider your child’s individual development.

Choosing an approach to weaning

There are several ways to introduce solid foods, and many families find that a flexible approach works best.

Traditional spoon-fed weaning

This approach involves offering smooth purees before gradually moving on to mashed and more textured foods as your child develops.

Many parents appreciate the ability to introduce foods gradually and monitor what their baby is eating.

Baby-Led weaning

With baby-led weaning, babies are encouraged to feed themselves using appropriately prepared finger foods from the beginning.

This approach allows children to explore food independently and develop hand-eye coordination and self-feeding skills.

A combination approach

Many families choose a mixture of both methods, offering spoon-fed foods alongside opportunities for self-feeding.

The most important thing is finding an approach that feels comfortable for both you and your child.

Five simple tips for a positive weaning experience

1. Introduce a range of tastes and textures

Weaning is all about exploration. Your baby may take time to accept new foods, and that’s perfectly normal.

Offering a variety of flavours, colours, and textures helps children become familiar with different foods and encourages adventurous eating habits as they grow.

Don’t be discouraged if a food is rejected initially. Children often need several opportunities to try something before they accept it.

2. Create calm and enjoyable mealtimes

Babies are incredibly perceptive and often pick up on the mood around them.

Try to choose times when everyone feels relaxed and there are few distractions. A calm environment helps children focus on exploring food and enjoying the experience.

Remember, weaning is a learning process rather than a test. Some days your child may eat more than others, and that’s completely normal.

3. Eat together as a family

Children learn by observing the people around them.

Whenever possible, sit and eat alongside your child. Watching adults enjoy food helps babies learn about eating and encourages them to try new things themselves.

Shared mealtimes also provide valuable opportunities for communication. Talking, smiling, and responding to your baby’s sounds and gestures all support their developing language skills.

4. Encourage Independence

Even young babies can begin to take part in mealtimes.

Simple opportunities such as holding a spoon, touching different foods, or choosing between two options help children develop confidence and independence.

As they grow, involving children in age-appropriate food preparation activities can further strengthen their interest in healthy eating.

5. Embrace the mess

If there’s one thing every parent learns quickly, it’s that weaning can be messy!

Food on faces, highchairs, floors, and sometimes even walls is all part of the learning process.

Exploring food through touch, smell, and taste plays an important role in development, so try not to worry too much about the mess. Bibs, splash mats, and a sense of humour can be lifesavers during this stage.

Why mealtimes matter

Weaning isn’t just about nutrition. It also supports many other areas of development.

During mealtimes, children develop:

  • Fine motor skills
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Communication and language
  • Independence
  • Social interaction skills
  • Confidence in trying new experiences

Every meal becomes an opportunity for learning and discovery.

Supporting healthy eating habits from the start

Positive eating habits begin in the early years.

Allowing children to explore foods without pressure, offering a variety of healthy options, and creating enjoyable mealtime experiences can help build a healthy relationship with food that lasts throughout childhood.

It’s important to remember that appetite naturally varies from day to day. Focusing on the overall experience rather than how much your child eats often leads to more positive outcomes.
