April and May at The Green Giraffe Nursery

Nature, Exploration, and the joy of Spring

Spring is a magical time at The Green Giraffe Nursery. As the world outside begins to bloom, our children naturally become more curious, observant, and eager to explore. Spring is the perfect time to explore the outdoors, connect with nature, and offer real experiences that nurture independence and wonder.

Nature

Throughout April and May, we will be spending more time outdoors, giving children the freedom to explore at their own pace. The garden becomes an extension of the classroom, offering endless opportunities for discovery.

This Spring, our children are invited to:

  • Observe new plants, insects, and seasonal changes
  • Explore textures like soil, grass, petals, and water
  • Practice real‑life skills such as sweeping, watering, and caring for the environment
  • Engage in quiet moments of reflection — listening to birds, watching clouds, feeling the breeze

These experiences help our children develop concentration, coordination, and a deep sense of connection to the natural world.

Spring‑Inspired Practical Life Activities

April and May bring beautiful opportunities to refresh our shelves with seasonal tasks that feel meaningful and purposeful.

Some of our spring Practical Life activities include:

  • Flower arranging — building fine‑motor skills, order, and aesthetic awareness
  • Watering plants — learning responsibility and care for living things
  • Sorting natural materials — stones, leaves, petals, and seeds
  • Spring cleaning tasks — child‑sized dusters, cloths, and brushes for caring for the environment

These activities support independence and help our children feel capable and trusted.

Sensorial Exploration Inspired by Spring

April and May’s colours, scents, and textures make it a perfect time for sensory learning.

This month, our children will explore:

  • Colour gradients using flowers, leaves, and natural objects
  • Scent matching with herbs like mint, lavender, and rosemary
  • Texture baskets filled with smooth stones, soft petals, and rough bark
  • Sound walks — identifying birds, rustling leaves, and outdoor rhythms

Sensorial experiences help our children build vocabulary, focus, and appreciation for beauty.

Supporting Emotional Growth Through Nature

Spring can bring big emotions as our children adjust to new routines, weather changes, and increased outdoor time. Nature offers a calming, grounding influence, and we use it intentionally to support emotional wellbeing.

We offer:

  • Quiet outdoor corners for peaceful moments
  • Opportunities for children to work alongside friends or independently
  • Gentle transitions between indoor and outdoor environments
  • Respectful observation to understand each child’s needs

When our children feel emotionally secure, they are more confident, joyful, and ready to learn.

Ideas of Spring Activities that you could do at home

Planting – Tomatoes, Potatoes, Runner Beans, Broad Beans and radishes are quick to sprout and wonderfully satisfying for young children to grow and dig up.

Flower Painting – Pop a few flowers into a paint pot with a teaspoon of water, then let children brush and dab to create their own floral portraits.

Nature Soup – Fill buckets with sticks, rocks, leaves, petals, soil and water. Add pots, pans and ladles so children can mix, stir and create their own “magic potions.”

Spring Playdough – Offer cutters, rollers and small insects for imaginative play. Add food colouring or gentle scents to make it even more engaging.

Water & Ice Play – Freeze coloured water to make vibrant ice cubes that add a fun twist to water play.

Here at The Green Giraffe Nursery, we’re really looking forward to a Spring filled with exploration, discovery, and the simple joy of learning through nature.
